Zsombó
(The County of Csongrád)
Zsombó came into being at the end of the 19th century, when the districts of Dorozsma and the nearby farmsteads were divided and redistributed. Its name was first mentioned in 1717 as Forrosomboja, a farmstead belonging to Szeged.
The coat-of-arms is a plate shield erect, rompu en pointe, pierced flanche-wise, the base curved to a point, the field azure tierced per tenté gules by two curves issuing from the chief and terminating in the dexter and sinister base. In the dexter field a peach alaisé or with a leaf vert on the stalk; in the sinister field, issuing from a slip vert an iris or. In the field gules of the tent, between a pair of swallows volant and counter-volant, sable and argent, a cross fleurs-de-lis argent encircled by a snake vert ondoyant in pale, its head pierced by the pointed base of the cross.
Across the top a tournament helmet proper at a slant, lined gules, bordered and barred or, round the gorget on a ribbon a medaillon, all or, crested by a five-pointed crown or (between three verdures two pearls), gorged with sapphires, rubies and emerald.
Mantling: gules and or.
The coat-of-arms of Zsombó belongs to the category of canting arms. The peach in the dexter field signifies that the settlement is an important centre of the fruit-growing and exporting smaller region around Szeged. The iris (Iris pseudacorus) refers to the specific marshland flora of the area (on the edge of the settlement the protected primeval marshland forest of Zsombó can be found). The colour blue of the two fields evokes the blue sky over this land abounding in sunshine. The red tent is an analogy of the one-time Cuman high cap, thus it is a reminder of the ethnic origin of the original settlers. In addition, the red field is a manifestation of life force and of trust in the future. The swallows, the typical and favourite birds of the region, symbolise the people who settled here. The cross, the limbs of which end in fleurs-de-lis, is the symbol of the Virgin Mary, exterminator of the Evil appearing in the figure of a snake. The church of the village was consecrated to honour the nativity of the Virgin Mary (Nativitas Mariae Virginis).
The helmet commemorates the local heroes and victims of the wars, while the crown is the symbol of the settlement's independence and autonomy.
