Zalaszombatfa

(The County of Zala)

Triangular shield, partitioned diagonally sinister dexter. In field vert an ear of wheat or, borne with two leaves, also or. In field azure a church argent is borne encouped, roofed gules and topped by a cross argent. Shield is decorated by a frame argent, lozengy, gules and sable. Above the shield the inscription ZALASZOMBATFA is borne in letters sable and encouped.

The settlement of Zalaszombatfa is situated at a distance of 13 kilometres west of Lenti. The name of the settlement was first mentioned in writing as early as 1335 and it appeared in the form ’Zombothfoulde’. Then, the settlement got mentioned by the name ’Zombat falua’ in 1598, a name which got changed to Szombatfa in 1696, until finally in 1898 the settlement’s contemporary name, Zalaszombatfa was adopted. The anterior constituent of the settlement’s name, the word ’szombat’ was either a person’s name, or a word, related to a particular market day of the week. (szombat/Saturday). The word ’fa’ was later attached to it. The word ’Zala’ differentiated the settlement from Szombatfa, which is located in Burgenland.

After the second world war the number of the local inhabitants went down radically. In 1996 the number of Zalaszombatfa’s inhabitants was only one fifth of the settlement’s population between the two world wars.

The local government opened an attractive guest house in the former school building, which accomodates a total of 45 people. This house awaits those people throughout the year, who want to relax in a nice and peaceful environment.
