Várpalota
(The County of Veszprém)
Várpalota had a coat of arms even in the Middle Ages. The form of today's coat of arms is retained from the Újlakys' divided one, and the winged helmet comes from the Drágffys' historic helmet coat of arms.
Várpalota as a market town also had a coat of arms which already contained the open crown - a symbol for human rights in market towns.
The Local Government of Várpalota accepted today's symbols of the town: the coat of arms, the flag, the banner, and the terms of their usage by a decree.
The town coat of arms was designed by a graphic artist Miklós Tomay at the request of the town, and it was accepted by the Department of Fine and Applied Arts with the guidance of a heraldic adviser. The motives of today's town coat of arms date back to the historic past, the Middle Ages. The coat of arms was designed according to the heraldic research of Sára Fodor Pacsu, local historian and Péter Nagybákay.
The coat of arms is a split Baroque shield, its right field has a black half wing in golden field, its left field is red and split with silver - similar to the coats of arms during the Age of the Árpáds. On the shield there is an open crown with leaves - a helmet.
Our town can be found half way between Székesfehérvár and Veszprém, along the main road Nr. 8. Várpalota lies on an inhabited territory - from time immemorial.
The symbol of the town is the medieval castle, rebuilt on several occasions, which got its name from its famous defender, György Thuri. Nowadays it makes room for the Hungarian Museum of Chemistry and the Mining Industry Historical Collection. It can be visited from May to October. The castle yard is the scene of summer programmes. We can also recommend the Baroque Roman Catholic Church in the town centre, the Zichy Castle behind that and the Synagogue, which makes a home for exhibitions known as Gyula Nagy Gallery.
The town consists of two parts: Várpalota and Inota. The population is almost 23.000. The mining industry used to play the primary role in the economic life of the town until recently. Today gas heating is built up, as well as the telephone network, the modernisation of the water- and sewerage system, a sewege farm is built, the high-capacity gas-heating centre is open.
We are proud of the rich cultural life of the town and its artistic groups with a history: Miners' Choir, Miners' Brass Band, Cserregő Folk Dance Group, Vox Castellana Chamber Choir. A significant number of the town's artists has formed a group 'Palota Artists' Circle'.
The next programmes stand pre-eminent among the other traditional ones: the Dávid Ney Choirs' Concert in April, the VÁR EXPO (economic exhibition and fair) at the beginning of June, the Brass Bands' Festival in August and the Várpalota Days in October.
The sights inside the town are completed with the beauty spots in the Bakony mountains.
