Szerencs

(The County of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén)

The public body of Szerencs took the opportunity to change the blazon of the town in 1987, and created the blazon described as follow:

A salient angled silver bastion with scored walls made up of squared stones can be seen in the upper red field of the chased crest. The bastion with a semicircular arched gate symbolizes the town, "The Gateway to Zemplén-Hegyalja" and the Castle of Szerencs.

There is a long-haired bearded silver figure looking right bending one knee raising his right hand to take an oath and placing his left hand on his chest in the lower blue field of the blazon. This heraldic figure taking an oath is István Bocskai.

The red and blue colours of the blazon refer to the former landowners, the Rákóczi family and the open gate symbolizes the openness to the world and the hospitality of the town and its inhabitants.

The blazon represents the history as well as the present of Szerencs.
