Paloznak
(The County of Veszprém)
Paloznak is situated on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, at the southern foot of the Bakony Mountains.
From the gently sloping hillsides covered with woods (Kishegy, Nagyhegy and Csákányhegy, symbolised by the triple mount in the coat-of-arms) a wonderful view opens onto the largest lake of Central Europe, Lake Balaton, represented by the wavy blue water in the base of the shield. The name Paloznak originates in the Slav expression 'po loznik', which means 'by the vineyard'. Since this region has a long-lasting historical tradition in viniculture, a bunch of grapes is also borne in the coat-of-arms. The village's unique historical monument is the belfry belonging to the Calvinists, so this motif had a decisive role in the creation of the charge.
The area was inhabited as early as in the Roman times. The mounted horsemen of the conquering Magyars appeared in the vicinity of today's Paloznak in the summer of the year 900.
The village had many times been a settlement of its own administration, but from the mid-1960s until 1990 first it belonged to Alsóörs, then to Csopak.
From 1 January 1991 onwards it has once again been independent, developing dynamically for the last eight years, and becoming one of the most beautiful and neatest settlements on the northern shore of the lake.
Paloznak's coat-of-arms is a shield erect, quarterly, pierced flanche-wise, the base curved to a point.
In dexter chief azure a belfry argent roofed dark brown, the basement emblazoned greyish. In the field vert of the dexter base a bunch of grapes or. In sinister chief argent three stylised mounts vert. In sinister base argent stylised waves azure, crested argent.
