The first known depiction of Hatvan’s coat of arms goes back to a hanging seal of 1452, in which a curly-haired human figure is borne. The figure is thought to be an angel, or the patron saint of the town’s church. Using the abbreviations and fragments of the legend of the seal the following text can be reconstructed: Sigillum civium ac iudicis de Hothoun (the seal of the citizens and the judge of the town of Hatvan). This coat of arms is likely to have been bestowed on the market town (oppidum) of Hatvan by King Sigismund, one of Hungary’s Angevin monarchs.

Following this date Hatvan’s coat of arms was not mentioned for over two centuries. In 1688, after the expulsion of the Turks from the town Hatvan had a new seal carved, an emblem, which had the charge of the lion rampant in it, holding a spectre in its front paws. The coats of arms of later periods had one or another version of this charge in them. A seal print of 1774 also featured a lion fourchée, buti t was holding a halberd. The legend of these seals - inscibed in Latin - reads as follows: Sigillum Hatvaniense; Sig(illum) OP(pid) Hatvan, that is Hatvan’s coat of arms, the seal of the market town of Hatvan. The seal of 1848 had a legend in Hungarian and it once again featured the charge of the lion holding a spectre.

The artist, who designed and created Hatvan’s modern coat of arms obviously used the motives of the former emblems with the aim of combining historical tradition with the town’s contemporary features. He kept the charge of the lion, which is meant to symbolise the settlement’s heroic past. The charge of the sceptre was abandoned in the town’s new coat of arms, but instead, a red stick was depicted in it.

The town of Hatvan can be found in the western part of Heves County; it is located at the northern edge of the Hungarian Great Plain and at the foot of the Mátra Hills. Hatvan is a railway and road junction of great significance.

Archeological excavations in the vicinity of the town unearthed artefacts of linear patterned pottery; these objects attest to the fact that the area of Hatvan was inhabited as early as the new Stone Age. Academics call this period the era of Hatvan culture. Other finds go back to the Copper, Bronze, Roman and Avar age.

Some sources mentioned Hatvan as the property of the Aba clan. The first written mention of the settlement’s name in the form Hotvin goes back to a 1235 document of the Premontrean order. In 1406 Hatvan got already recorded as market town. Then in 1536 it was attacked and looted by the Turks, but the castle of the town remained in the hands of the local people. From 1544 onward Hatvan thrived as the seat of three sanjaks (Turkish administrative districts). It was in 1525 that the parliament had a session in the town. Hatvan got liberated from the Turks in 1686. In 1710 the castle was taken in by the troops of the Austrian emperor and within a few decades it got destroyed. The Great Plague sweeping across Europe reached Hatvan in 1739 and 60% of the town’s inhabitants died. From the late 18th century onward commerce was on the growth and then the railway constructions after the Compromise of 1867 gave a new impetus to the town’s development. The process of urbanisation started in 1925and then the town developed uninterruptedlly. Due to this process Hatvan became the first settlement which was raised to the rank of town in 1945. Until 1969 hatvan was a district centre; the number of its inhabitants was growing, the infrastucture and the public institutions were improving. In addition, new housing estates were built and the number of local inhabitants was also on the rise.
