The history of Géberjén:
A simple proper name became the name of the settlement that refers to the early 10-12th century origin of the village. The Hungarian personal name Gabrian can be found in its name that originates from the Latin Gabrianus.
The village was first mentioned in documents in 1181 during the inspection of landmarks of the monasteries in Cégény; probably it was an inhabited area at that time. In the 13-14th centuries the landlord of the village was the Matucsinai family that had estates in Bereg County. The family became disloyal, so they lost the village. The Kun family of Rozsály and the Petőfi family of Szánta got the village, then the female line of the Báthory family received it. its small population left the village for a while as in the 15th century a lot of documents mention it as wasteland. Its rapid destroyment and uncertain situation can be explained by the closeness and the frequent flood of the meandering reach of River Szamos. In the 15th century beside the Báthory family, the Fülpessi, Matucsinai and Kun families of Rozsály owned lands in the area. The village was the property of the same families in the 16th century, but in the 17th century the land of the Báthory family became the property of the Bethlen and later the Rákóczi family. As one of the villages of the estate of Ecsed, it shared the fate of other villagees. Between 1746 and 1748 Geberjén became the property of Earl Ferenc Károlyi, while at the time of the first census the landlord was Antal Károlyi. In the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century the owner was the Jéky family. The village that situated next to the big bends of River Szamos suffered a lot from floods. The fact that the village started to turn into a wasteland in the 15th century is probably due to the frequent floods. In 1882 the whole village was under water. The last flood occurred in on 14-15th May, 1970.
Next to the village the allotment of Szernye is found, which appeared among the lands of the Matucsinai, Báthori and Rozsályi Kun families in 1417.
Architectural and cultural features:
Geberjén is situated on the Szamoshát, on the right bank of the old River Szamos, in the bend of the river. Since the cutting of the Szamos at Tunyogmatolcs it lies beside a backwater.
Originally it is a one-street village, the new parts were built in the south-western direction. The plots are in rows, that is a typical feature in the settlement. In the place of the old wooden church another church was built with tilted roof and a wall made of mud and twigs in 1741. This was corrected in 1837 and a wooden tower was built in front. The foundation stone of the today brick Calvinist Church was laid on 28th March, 1883. The church was built in 1884 without a tower. The 21 metres high tower that is in front of the north-western frontage was built in 1914. This is a one-storeyed, classicist building with a frontal middle. The 64 m2 interior bears a single coloured planked ceiling and 260 seats. The pulpit crown made in 1776 is taken from the former church.
