(Vas County)

The settlement’s coat of arms can be described as follows:

Spade shield erect and azure, its base is curved to a point. In the centre of the shield, issuing from a pedestal argent, an arm is borne, habited gules and holding a scimitar. It is flanked by leafy branches or, bound by their stalks.

The symbols of the settlement’s coat of arms can be interpreted as follows:

When creating the settlement’s modern coat of arms the representatives of the local government of Egyházashetye took over the undoubtedly unique charges of the settlement’s 19th century seal. The arm issuing from a pedestal and holding a scimitar may relate to the great son of the village, the poet Dániel Berzsenyi, who can be considered the celebrated poet of the Reform Era of the 19th century and who died in 1836.

The settlement was mentioned as Hege in 14th century documents. Its first documented mention goes back to 1338. The word Egyházas, the anterior constituent of the settlement’s name is a reference to the fact that the village used to be a religious centre of the entire area and it had a church of its own as early as the beginning of the Middle Ages. In medieval documents there are no references to a village coat of arms. Since all the local documents had been destroyed by the storms of history, the first sealed documents of the settlement were dated only some time in mid-19th century.

The 19th century round seal with a diametre of 30 millimetres had a right arm on a pedestal in it and it was flanked by palm leaves, bound by their stalks. The seal’s legend reads as follows: EGYHÁZAS HETYE PECSETE 1837 (the seal of Egyházas hetye 1837). The date was to mark the year when the local seal was first used. This seal remained in use until the end of the 19th century. When in 1907 the settlements of Vas County got registered the administrators of Egyházashetye had only a simple seal made and this is why the traditional charges of the old village seal could be forgotten.

The settlement’s coat of arms was created in 1989, in the year of the changing of the political system in Hungary. The emblems of the local government were inaugurated in May 1992.
